Speaking your truth allows you to offer your unique wisdom so adeptly that they can’t dismiss you and so you won’t put them on the defensive. Speaking your truth – effectively – is also a subtle art that you will use in your personal life to ease communications with family and friends.

To learn the subtle art of truthtelling to get ahead in integrity in our careers we need to unlearn many of the myths our culture teaches us about truth when we’re young. This isn’t rocket science, but it does require some reflection. It’s also a good idea to practice this skill before you have the big meeting with the big boss or the anchor client.

Almost half of respondents from a recent survey (48%) say they withhold their truth more than 25% of the time. Why? Because 82% say they’ve been penalized in the past for speaking up. People feel that their integrity is at stake when something important is on the line and most (76%) feel regret when they decide to bite their tongues. But 72% said that speaking truth to power actually got them ahead!
