Hi Dana,

Reverse Mentoring is a term we use. We wrote a great article about it titled "Who's The Mentor Now: A Word of Caution About Reverse Mentoring." You can check it out here:

Great post, Dana! As someone who works at a firm that creates business mentoring programs, your insights are right on. As you've pointed out, it is not only the mentee who is inspired by a mentoring relationship, but also the mentor. And there are a lot of us out there who can benefit from reverse mentoring as well.
Thanks again!

He wants us to let him dominate, but I refuse. I'm to the point where after he has his say (his is always the first and LONGEST position on the table), I am going to paraphrase his position and then say "Ok, we see your position, now let's see what other people think? If that does not work, I have no problem telling him to either shut up or leave the meeting.

Bret - I know that guy too! :)
Usually, when I figure out it's "that guys" at the meeting, I start finding way to ignore him politely. Most everyone else is sick of him too so when I can direct energy away from him to someone else, everyone jumps on board and helps. Right vs. Right often doesn't work on that guy, tho I always give it a shot before giving up. I believe in redemption! Thanks for stopping by.

Very good advice, Dana. I work with a guy that brings a Clydesdale to every meeting to shit all over us. He is not interested in in dialogue, only discussion, and he is not satisfied unless he wins the discussion. He is an extreme narcissist, and he defies all these common sense approaches to good communication. The only thing he seems to understand really well is a show of force equal to his own. Frustrating.

Hi Lyn. I believe that listening to truth is as an important a skill for leaders as being able to speak it. And "truth" isn't always an either/or, often it's a both/and. Good leaders know that! Appreciate your insight.

Excellent question, Dana. I like your reference to the role of the fool or jester. It is too easy to get caught up in the "boss" role and forget there are other ideas out there. It is so hard to listen to those who speak their truth when that truth is not what we want to hear.

Dana, You have addressed a very important point. It is essential to consider integrity and trust in an organization for that organization to function effectively. In addition to doing what one says he will do, a real concern is people taking an expectation as a promise. Often, people believe someone is going to do something, but they never really agreed to do it. That leads to loss of trust. In my work with organizations in this area, we have focused on making and managing promises as a way to expand trust and found that it made a difference. Thanks. Lyn
